Relocating for a new job opportunity goes further than just changing your address. It’s about gaining new perspectives, finding new friends, and embracing challenges that shape your career journey. At Bolt, the Estonian-founded unicorn, many employees have already taken that leap – moving to Tallinn to work at the headquarters to grow both personally and professionally.

This story explores the relocation experiences of people who decided to work in Estonia. You’ll get a glimpse into what it’s like to step outside the familiar, adapt to a new culture, and work at a rapidly expanding global company like Bolt.

From countries like Brazil, Australia, and the UK, all the way to Estonia, these stories highlight career development, cross-cultural collaboration, and the meaning of Bolt’s ownership-driven culture. Work in Estonia supports individuals interested in working in Estonia through the entire relocation journey, from providing the gateway to apply for jobs to integration.

Lucas: from São Paulo to Tallinn, Estonia

He grew up in São Paulo, one of the world’s largest cities. He is 31 years old and loves football, supports São Paulo FC, practices martial arts, and enjoys connecting with people.

His career with Bolt began in January 2022, when he joined the team as a Product Manager. Now he’s advanced to Senior Product Manager and, as of August 2025, leads Bolt’s Identity team – driving innovation in verification, authentication, and privacy. In other words, he’s responsible for the crucial systems that keep millions of user accounts secure.

As Lucas explains, his motivation has always been to “work on something where the impact would be clear and felt by millions of people” – and in Estonia, that vision has become a reality.

Why choose Bolt and Estonia?

After the pandemic, Lucas wanted to move abroad and build a career in an international setting. He had chats with companies in Europe and the Middle East, but he chose Bolt because they have a strong mission he liked and it is a fast- growing company with international mobility. It was also important for him to see the change he was contributing to.

He knew about Estonia from a trip to Finland 10 years ago. He had also heard about Estonia being digital, which means 100% of public services are online and can be accessed easily, saving time. That is an important factor in attracting international talent to work in Estonia. It was also fascinating how a small place builds such big things, the startups having global reach. After getting the offer at Bolt, he did not overthink it and accepted it.

How did the relocation process go?

It all happened fast, Bolt team booked the flights and also housing for the initial period of a month. He received visa support as well, allowing him to focus on settling in, finding a long-term apartment and meeting new colleagues. He explained: “Everything moved quickly.” “From the moment I signed, I felt supported and could just focus on starting my new life. The process was simple, and Estonia’s bureaucracy was straightforward.”

Less bureaucracy is one of the greatest benefits of working in Estonia, governmental procedures can be done online – it is the most advanced digital society in the world, where technology is embedded in the culture. The International House of Estonia offers support for talent and their families relocating to Estonia. The process of settling in, and integrating can seem daunting, but the goal of the one-stop shop is to make integration as easy as possible, with all important public services under one roof.

December-time in Estonia.. a surprise

When Lucas arrived in December, he was shocked. There was snow, it was dark and cold coming from Brazil. But he says it was also magical. Sparkling Christmas lights, clean and walkable streets, the slower pace of life, he really liked it. In terms of the culture, it was different – people were quieter and reserved, but at the same time very active at sports. “It was love at first sight,” Lucas remembers. “I didn’t expect to adapt so quickly, but I felt at home almost immediately.”

John: from the East Midlands (UK) to Tallinn, Estonia

John started working at Bolt in 2021 as a Regional Marketing Manager for Western Europe. At first, he worked from the UK, while collaborating closely with coworkers in Estonia.

How Estonia turned into home

“When the opportunity to relocate came up, it felt like a natural next step,” he said. “I’d always been curious about Estonia, and moving meant I could be closer to the people I was working with every day.” At first, he thought he would be here for a couple of years, but three years later he is still here and calls Estonia home.

For John, what made Estonia home was the small but significant moments like winter snowfall, long summer nights and the sauna experiences. The moment he realized Estonia was becoming home was when he could think in Estonian.

Relocation as a career accelerator

For John, moving abroad was not just a change in lifestyle, it transformed his career. What began as a regional role quickly grew into leading Bolt’s Local Marketing teams across more than 50 international markets, spanning from Asunción to Auckland. He says that it has been an incredibly rewarding journey with a steep learning curve, being at HQ deepened his understanding of Bolt and strengthened his relationships.

Pace and culture in Tallinn

Contrary to the assumption that working in Tallinn is more relaxed than in cities like London, John found the pace at Bolt’s headquarters just as intense and demanding. The company’s culture emphasizes speed, ownership, and excellence, with decisions often made in hours rather than weeks. This environment pushes employees to adapt quickly, focus on priorities, and take responsibility from day one.

More than just growth campaigns

Beyond growth campaigns, John’s most meaningful work has centered on supporting Bolt’s driver community, the backbone of the platform. From developing safety features that protect drivers on the job to organizing community events that bring families together, these initiatives highlight the global scale of impact. For him, the real value lies in seeing how Bolt’s work directly improves lives around the world.

Rory: Cairns, Australia to Estonia

Rory is from Cairns, Australia. He is a 42-year-old programmer, a dad, helping Bolt take its Rides service into new markets. Outside of work, he’s happiest bringing tabletop figurines to life and sharing the results with colleagues in Bolt’s #gaming-hub Slack channel.

Courts and paperwork to tech

Life didn’t always look like this. Back in Cairns, Australia, a town of beaches, rainforest and year-round heat, Rory worked in the Family Court and the Magistrate’s Court. His days were full of paperwork, divorce files, and sometimes officiating marriages. The move to Estonia in 2015 was for personal reasons: he’d met his future wife through friends and decided to take the leap. Career plans came second.

Life in Estonia and settling in

At first, he wasn’t chasing a job. He spent months just settling in, getting used to snow that lasted until March and realising that yes, he was going to need a proper winter jacket. Eventually, he landed at TransferWise (now Wise) in customer support, mainly because they were looking for English speakers. It wasn’t glamorous, but it paid the bills and kept the lights on while he adjusted.

Tallinn slowly grew on him. The city felt ambitious but manageable, big enough to keep things interesting but small enough to feel at home. Public transport was a revelation compared to Cairns, and although loneliness crept in at times, he managed to balance keeping in touch with friends back home while building new roots here.

The switch to a tech career

The switch into engineering came later. Rory had messed around with code as a teen, but at Wise he got the chance to automate small tasks and build simple scripts. That’s when it got serious – surrounded by Estonia’s supportive startup culture, he taught himself more and started moving towards software engineering.

In 2021 he joined Bolt. The pace was a shock at first, faster, more demanding, and far more energising than anything he’d done before. He started in the Driver Growth and Conversion team, working on systems that drivers everywhere could use. These days he’s with Rides Expansion, making sure those systems work smoothly in new countries. In his first year he was part of three launches, with more coming up.

Looking back, Rory knows the real reward of relocating is not just the career shift, it is the life he has built with his family. After nearly a decade in Estonia, he feels rooted here. He’s built a career he enjoys, found a city that feels like home, and created a balance between two worlds. He is settled in Estonia.
